The first thing you need to know is, birds will be pulled in by the geographic location of your garden. So to find out what birds are in your specific area at the moment, you will need to do some research. Some areas you can consult are online search - for example { types of birds in[your area], your local library may have documentations on birds in your area, also book stores are another place to can search. A good way I found is to take pictures of birds within your area, then  see if they are common to the area, by doing research and if they are you can take the appropriate methods to attract them. No matter what type of bird you are trying to attract to your area the one thing you will need is a source of water for them. It does not matter what the size is or what material it is made up of, just match the source to the type of bird. Small bird (small bird bath), larger bird(wild ducks- a pond or pool).

The next thing is you will need to make sure they have a source of ample food supply, this should be related to their natural type of food. A type of seed that many birds like are sun flower seeds, these are very easy to find and are low in cost. What you need to do first is find out about the dietary preferences of the bird you are trying to attract to your area, then make sure they have access to it. Okay, now that you have taken steps to attract the birds to your area, you will need to make sure to keep away all the things that might scare or disturb the birds. In some cases this may be hard, for example if you have a neighbor that has a noisy dog or a cat that likes to hunt birds. What you can do is talk to your neighbor and explain to them, what you are trying to do and maybe come up with a solution.

Another thing that you will need to know is not all birds get along with each other. Certain species of birds will avoid your area if they encounter another species that are a problem for them. You will need to find out about their habits and nature, and this will be a decisive factor in what birds you want to bring in to your garden. Some birds can be a benefit to your garden by controlling unwanted insects that are a nuisance to you or your plants. So if you have plants that are being pestered by a certain type of insect, find out if there is a species of birds in your area that have that insect in their diet.
